Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate

If you’re uninsured or not using insurance, you have the right to know what your medical care will cost before you receive it.

Under federal law, health care providers must give you a Good Faith Estimate of the expected charges for non-emergency services.

What to Know:

  • You have the right to a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of services, including medical tests, prescriptions, equipment, and facility fees.

  • You should receive this estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your scheduled service.

  • You can also request a Good Faith Estimate at any time—even before scheduling.

  • If you receive a bill that’s $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it.

  • Be sure to save a copy of your estimate for your records.
